1967 Corvette Sting Ray - Part III: Ceramic Coating
With the paint correction complete, it was time to move on to the ceramic coating process. This process can take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the type of coating and size of the vehicle. For this corvette we opted for Gtechniq C1, Crystal Lacquer, topped with Gtechniq EXOv4. C1 It is a quartz-based coating that comes with a 5-year guarantee and will form the best bond with older paints that do not have modern clear coat.
Before laying down the coatings I wiped all painted surfaces down with Gtechniq Panel Wipe to remove any remaining oils left over from the paint correction stage. This is an extremely important step in any ceramic coating application, so I actually go around the vehicle twice to insure the surface is as bare and naked as possible.
After the C1 was applied I called it for the day to allow the coating to fully cure in the shop overnight.
The next morning it was time to apply the second layer of coating: Gtechniq EXOv4. This coating can be applied by itself or as a topper to C1 or either of the Crystal Serum coatings. It adds extra gloss, slickness, and water and dirt repellency. I like to apply EXOv4 first thing in the morning to allow it enough time to cure before the customer picks up later in the day.
