Ceramic Coatings

What is a Ceramic Coating?

Ceramic coating, also known as nano glass coating, acts as an additional layer of protection for your car. The ultra-fine, thin coating is manually applied over cars by hand and uses nanotechnology to seal and protect the entire surface. This makes it extremely water repellent, and helps prevent damage from UV rays, chemicals, excessive heat, minor scratching, dirt, and other kinds of heavy pollutants. It’s almost like a glass-like barrier for your vehicle, meaning it can take damage and pressure much better than a non-coated vehicle. It has been used by the military for years thanks to its protective properties and was then introduced to the auto industry within the last decade or so

.

One of the most popular reasons for ceramic coating your vehicle is its ability to improve the gloss and shine of your car’s paint, keeping its appearance looking as good as new. As the coating prevents the build-up of dirt and pollutants, the car stays looking cleaner longer. You will notice a significant difference when it comes to washing the car, and will be able to spend less time washing it, and more time enjoying it.

What are some of the benefits of a ceramic coating?

  • Paint stays cleaner longer, and is easier and faster to wash

    • Dirt releases easier, faster, and the resulting effect is much less time and effort needed to make your vehicle look like it has been freshly detailed.

  • No need to wax or seal the vehicle for the life of the coating

    • Ceramic coatings create a barrier that is significantly longer lasting than any wax or sealant. While waxes and sealants last for weeks or months, ceramic coatings last for several years.

  • Jaw dropping gloss, and slickness

    • Clients have told us that even years after having their vehicle ceramic coated, they still get compliments about the car having a “just detailed look” after a simple wash.

  • UV and chemical protection

    • Ceramic coatings provide protection against harmful UV rays and chemicals far beyond any wax or sealant. Most professional grade coatings are very chemical resistant and can only be damaged or removed by extremely high or low PH products.

  • Marring resistance

    • While NOTHING is “scratch proof” some professional grade coatings do make the surface harder than original clear coat, thus greatly reducing the amount of swirl marks accumulated over time vs. a non-ceramic coated vehicle with proper washing and drying techniques.

  • Peace of mind with a manufacturer backed guarantee

    • As a Gtechniq Accredited Installer, our Crystal Serum Coatings are backed with a 5 or 9 year guarantee.

SHOULD YOU GET A CERAMIC COATING ON YOUR CAR?

Here are some things to consider:

  • Protect your investment. Your vehicle's paint is the most expensive single component on your vehicle. Coatings can be an expensive up front cost, are actually more affordable in the long run when compared to waxing your vehicle every few months. A properly installed and properly maintained coating on your paint will help hold the value of your vehicle.

  • The best time to get a coating is on a newer vehicle - 1 to 2 years old for example. Our goal is to get the paint as perfect as possible before sealing it in with a coating. Older vehicles will require more time during the paint correction stage, but we have often seen new vehicles needing just as much paint correction!

  • Coatings are not "miracle products." They do not prevent rock chips, and can still be scratched just like your regular clear coat with improper maintenance or washing techniques. That being said, they will strengthen your clear coat and resist the elements way more than any wax or sealant could!

Common questions about ceramic coatings

How much does a ceramic coating cost?

You can often see a wide discrepancy in pricing form one detailer to the next, as well as dealerships offering coatings on new car purchases. Many factors affect the pricing of a ceramic coating, including but not limited to:

  • The experience, knowledge, and skills of the detailer applying the coating. Are they accredited with a coating company?

  • The type of coating being applied, all products are different. Are you just getting a paint coating, or are you getting the wheels, plastics, and glass coated as well?

  • The level of preparation needed prior to applying the coating. Some dealerships or detailers will skip steps altogether in order to offer a lower price.

  • The size, color, and manufacturer of the vehicle can also affect pricing. Some vehicles have much softer clear coats that are harder to prepare for coating application than others.

At High-Def Detailing we pride ourselves on transparency, openness, and education. We have several different options of coatings to help fit within your budget and needs.

How long does a ceramic coating appointment take?

Most ceramic coating jobs take a minimum of 2 to 3 days to complete. Example: If you drop your vehicle off on Wednesday evening, it will be ready for pickup Friday evening or Saturday afternoon.

How do I maintain my coated vehicle?

Hand washes are best to maintain your ceramic coated vehicle. It is recommended to bring your vehicle back to High-Def Detailing once a year for an annual coating maintenance appointment. During this service we will decontaminate and refresh the coating.

Can I take my coated vehicle through an automatic car wash?

Short answer, Yes. However, it is HIGHLY recommended to avoid automatic car washes with brushes. These can add marring to the paint, whether it's coated or not. Touchless automatic car washes are going to be OK when hand washing is not available.

Will a ceramic coating prevent water spots?

Ceramic Coatings, like any other surface on a car, are susceptible to water spotting from hard minerals from many water sources. Only washing the vehicle in the shade, early mornings, or late in the evenings in hot climates helps. Using good quality microfiber towels, a leaf blower or air compressor to help dry the vehicle quickly can help as well. Water spotting can be removed safely from most coatings but are not covered under any known coating warranty or guarantee as they are preventable.

Can I still get rock chips and scratches now that my vehicle is coated?

Ceramic coatings can still be scratched and chipped. While some coatings do provide a measurable degree of hardness vs. factory clear coat, no coating is scratch or chip proof. This is a common misconception that is regularly spread by many dealerships and even some detailers looking to make a quick sale.

My car is brand new, does it still need to be clayed and polished before applying a coating?

Yes, these steps are necessary for a quality ceramic coating application. Any dealership or detailer that does not follow these steps prior to applying a ceramic coating are likely improperly applying the coating. Most new cars, even ones straight off the truck, have imperfections in the paint and need a proper "exfoliation" and light polish in order to properly prepare the surface.

My vehicle was just in an accident and needs repairs at a body shop. How does this affect the coating?

The body shop should be able to perform their necessary work whether a vehicle has a coating on it or not. If they repaint a panel it will need to be recoated however. If your insurance company is covering the body shop work, they should be able to cover the cost of having panels recoated as well. Make sure to inform your detailer as soon as possible after an accident occur so he or she can provide an estimate for re-coating the damaged sections of vehicle so that you can submit the information to your insurance company.
